Privacy policy

The short version:

  • Your days stay on your iPhone.
  • Only the date and the country are saved. Not your exact location, and not a trail of places.
  • No account, no ads, no analytics, no trackers, and no Where You Were server.
  • I never receive your days or your location.

Effective 2 October 2026

Who I am

Where You Were is a free iPhone app made by Swith Bell. In this policy, “I” means me, the developer, and “the app” means Where You Were. You can reach me at swithbell@icloud.com.

What the app saves on your iPhone

  • For each day: the date, the country (its two-letter code and name), where the country came from (a location reading, your own choice, or Demo Mode sample days), whether you changed it, and when it was saved.
  • For each change you make: the time, the old country, the new country and the note you typed.
  • Flight notes, if you add any: the date, flight number, from, to and your note.
  • Your settings, such as reminders, the Verify card and Demo Mode, and the order your countries got their colors.

All of this stays on your iPhone. It is not sent to me or to anyone else, unless you choose to share a report yourself.

What the app does not collect

  • Your exact location. A location is used for a moment to find the country, then it is thrown away. No map trail is kept.
  • Your name, email, phone number, contacts or photos.
  • Advertising IDs, analytics, crash reports or tracking of any kind.

On the App Store, the app’s privacy label is Data Not Collected. I do not run a server for the app, so nothing about your days comes to me. I do not sell, rent or share your information with anyone.

How location is used

The app uses location only to tell which country your iPhone is in, so it can count your days. It only asks the iPhone for a rough position, to about a kilometer, not a precise one.

Your iPhone first asks whether to allow location While Using the App. That is enough for the app to work: it notes the country when you open it, and days in between count as the last known country. If you also choose Always, the iPhone uses a low-power check that wakes the app after a big move, so a new country can be noticed even when the app is closed. It does not run GPS all day.

To turn a location into a country, the app uses Apple’s built-in map service. That means your iPhone sends the location to Apple for the lookup. Apple handles this under Apple’s privacy policy. I never receive it.

You can change or turn off location at any time in your iPhone’s Settings app. Without location, you can still set days by hand.

No iCloud sync

The app does not sync your days through iCloud or anywhere else. If you back up your iPhone to iCloud or to a computer, that backup normally includes the app’s data, as it does for most apps. Apple runs iCloud backups. I have no access to them.

Reports you share

When you make a report, the app creates PDF and CSV files on your iPhone and opens the standard iPhone share sheet. The files go only where you send them, such as Mail, Messages, AirDrop or Files. Once shared, they are handled by whoever receives them.

Reminders

If you turn on monthly and year-end reminders, they are scheduled on your iPhone. No server is involved.

Links to other websites

The app has links to official government pages, for example the U.S. I-94 site, the Government of Canada entry and exit page, the IRS and the CRA. They open in Safari. The app does not read or collect anything from those sites, and their own privacy policies apply.

This website

whereyouwere.app has no cookies, no analytics and no ads. Its font and pictures are served from the site itself. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Like most web hosts, GitHub may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses, for security. See the GitHub privacy statement.

Deleting your data

  • Flight notes can be deleted in the Trips tab by swiping left.
  • Demo Mode sample days can be removed in Settings with Remove unedited demo days.
  • To delete everything, delete the app. This removes all of its data from your iPhone. An older iPhone backup may still hold a copy until that backup is replaced or deleted.

Before deleting, you may want to save a copy with Download my data in Settings.

Children

The app is not made for children and is not directed at children under 13. I do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, I will update this page and the date at the top.
