Where You Were

Counts the days so you don’t have to.

A brush-ink drawing of a boy and a girl, each carrying a small suitcase, walking with their dog toward a 1950s propeller airliner with boarding stairs at its open door.

Where You Were quietly notes which country your iPhone is in each day, stamps it on a calendar, and keeps a running count of your days in each country. No account. No ads. Everything stays on your phone.

A month, stamped

Here is a pretend March. Every day you have lived gets a stamp in that country’s ink. Colors go in the order you first visit: your first country is sage, your second is blue, and so on. Only days that haven’t happened yet are blank.

Where You Were

March 2026

    This month

      This year so far

      January 1 to March 26 · 85 days

Many residency and tax rules, like the 183-day rule, turn on a count like this. Where You Were keeps it ready. It is a record, not tax or legal advice.

        Who it’s for

        • Dual citizens

Show how your year was split, without digging through old boarding passes.

        • Snowbirds

Spend the winter somewhere warm and keep an easy eye on your days: a snowbird day tracker that runs by itself.

        • Families across borders

Visiting grandparents, sharing time between two homes, or caring for a parent in another country.

        • People who travel for work

When a visa form, an employer or a tax return asks how many days you spent where, the answer is ready.

        • Anyone who wants to remember

Where you’ve been and when, whether or not it’s in your calendar.

        How it works

        1. Allow location once. Your iPhone asks twice: first “While Using the App,” then “Always.” Say yes both times, and the app can note the country even on days you never open it.
        2. Each day gets a stamp. The app records the country your iPhone is in and stamps the day in that country’s ink. There are no blank days: it assumes you stayed where you were until a new reading shows otherwise. If a day is wrong, tap it and fix it.
        3. The counts add up. See your days in each country for this year, any past year, or the last 365 days. When your accountant asks, make a PDF or a spreadsheet in a couple of taps.

Your days stay on your iPhone

        • Only the date and the country are saved. Not your street, and not a trail of map points.
        • No account, no ads, no analytics, no trackers.
        • There is no Where You Were server. Your days are never sent to me or to anyone else.
        • Free. Nothing is locked.

        Questions, answered

        Is it really free?

Yes. No price, no subscription, no ads, no in-app purchases and no account to make.

Which countries does it work in?

All of them. Wherever your iPhone can find its location and look up the country, the day is counted. Each new country gets its own ink, in the order you first visit.

What if my phone doesn’t get a reading one day?

The day isn’t left blank. The app assumes you stayed where you were until a new reading shows otherwise. If that’s wrong, tap the day and choose the right country.

Can I share my days with my accountant?

Yes. Make a PDF and a spreadsheet file (CSV) for one year or for all years, and send them however you like.
